Top 5 CLEAN Personal Care Products
The more we learned, the more we realized how imperative it was to change not only our foods, but all of our personal care and cleaning products as well.
This is why we started the “Get Clean in 2016 Initiative” in the Hill house, that includes switching all products in the home to healthy, non-toxic alternatives.
It has been a long journey for us, but we are well underway.
The problem with replacing everything by non-toxic products was that a lot of natural products didn’t work as well. I was willing to put up with the sub-par quality, because at least they weren’t jeopardizing our health.
Fortunately, I’ve now found stellar quality products that don’t have any toxic ingredients, and I’m excited to let you peek into our personal cabinets and see our top five favorite products.
1. Skin Care [Beautycounter Routine Clean Cream Cleanser]
Routine skin care is very important, and cleaning your face is a huge part of that.
It wouldn’t make sense to use a facial cleanser that makes your face “dirty” with fragrances, synthetic oils, parabens, harsh alcohols, and sodium laureth sulfate, which strips the skin of oils and removes protection from chemicals.
We recommend Routine Clean Cream Cleanser by Beautycounter. This product is rated a two by the Environmental Working Group (which is fantastic!). If you are not familiar with this essential site, make sure you check it out.
Basically, any rating from 0 - 2 is super safe and anything from a 3 - 7, you will want to avoid like your life depends on it, because it does!
This cleanser is a creamy, dreamy daily cleanser that washes away your makeup and other impurities by soothing your skin, while leaving the protective layer of your own natural oils on your skin.
I, personally, use it every single day and I love it.
It takes all my makeup off in one wash, even my mascara. This is the only face wash that doesn’t make my skin feel like it’s been stripped.
You can (and you MUST) get this cleanser too and start using it today!
2. Skin Care [Beautycounter’s Daily Exfoliant]
Face exfoliants are huge for removing dead skin cells.
You don’t need to use this every day, but if you do, you need to make sure that the grit in the exfoliant isn’t something that can get lodged in or under your skin.
Nor do you want a harsh, plastic item that tiny abrasions on your skin.
Beautycounter’s Daily Exfoliant is a cream exfoliant that also moisturizes. It sweeps away your impurities, cleans your skin, and polishes. It uses jojoba beads to help scrub your skin while the organic coconut and aloe soothe and hydrate your skin.
This stuff is unreal so great. I use it every single week!
It uncovers your fresh and radiant skin and is nonabrasive.
3. Deodorant [Pure Haven Essentials Deodorant]
The struggle is real!
It’s so difficult to find a deodorant that actually works and doesn’t have dangerous stuff like aluminum, parabens, propylene glycol, chemical fragrances, and plastics.
So why are these toxins used, anyway?
Aluminum is used to travel into the sweat ducts and intentionally plug them up so you can’t sweat. That means you can’t eliminate toxins from your body.
This is especially dangerous women who shave their underarms. Shaving opens the pores, and we apply those toxins right into our bodies. Chemical hormone disruptors that are linked to breast cancer are going right into the tissues where the lymph nodes connect to breast tissue.
The only people who deny that correlation are the mega-corporations with money to gain.
One in eight women is diagnosed with breast cancer.
Not on our watch!
Finally, I’ve found a super-clean dry deodorant that not only keeps me dry but smells nice and fresh, too. Pure Haven Essentials Deodorant actually works. Here is the list of ingredients:
• Organic arrowroot powder
• Organic cocoa butter
• Organic coconut oil
• Organic beeswax
• Baking soda
• Organic Shea butter
• Organic peppermint essential oil
• Organic tea tree oil
Tea tree oil is antibacterial. That means it kills the bacteria that makes you stink! It cuts the odor while still allowing you to eliminate the toxins from your body.
4. All-Purpose Cleaner [Doctor Bronner’s Castile Cleaner]
Talk about a jack-of-all-trades cleaner!
This stuff is made with a variety of essential oils. The cleaner must be diluted, so a tiny little bit lasts a long time (great for your budget!).
We use this for both body wash and hand washing.
It can also be used as a base for do-it-yourself laundry detergents and home cleaners. This is our powerhouse, go-to cleaner for almost everything.

5. Toothpaste [Homemade]
This is another hidden pitfall of toxins, and it’s probably the most dangerous of them all.
Did you know that up to 95 percent of most diseases start in your gums?
Each one of your teeth is orchestrated along meridians in your body, which means each tooth is correlated to a specific organ. If you’ve got gum disease in a certain tooth, bacteria can travel down that meridian systemically and affect every organ along the way.
It is critically important to have optimum gum and tooth health. We have searched high and low for a good toothpaste.
There are some good pre-made options, but we have found that the most benefits come from making our own toothpaste. It’s not as daunting as it seems.
Our toothpaste is made of these few ingredients:
• Organic coconut oil
• Baking soda
• Essential oil for flavor
• Stevia to taste (optional)
Simply start with coconut oil in the desired amount and continue adding baking soda until you reach the paste consistency you desire.
I would add the essential oil and Stevia while everything is easy to mix and not too thick.
NOTE: in the summer months, you may need to add a bit more baking soda as the coconut oil will melt easier as the temperature climbs.
My dental hygienist was floored when I started using my homemade rendition. She was raving and asked, “What are you using? You have always had clean teeth, but I’ve never seen your teeth this clean and white, and you have no buildup.”
Your choice of essential oil can be peppermint, wintergreen, cinnamon, or even orange blossom, lemon, or vanilla for kids. There’s an endless list of possibilities, and this stuff really works in terms of whitening and keeping you clean.
